I know he doesn't sound like he's even thinking of it. But it's clear that his campaign is in a shambles. He's got a VP who is woefully unqualified, and he must know that by now. He has a staff that has come up with only one strategy -- lying. His reputation has been shredded. And he is on his way to losing by huge, overwhelming margins in states that were once solidly Republican.
I don't see McCain as the 'Happy Warrior' type guy who'll just take one for the team, he's never been much of a team player. He's not Bob Dole.
I'd say there's a chance that he could simply announce that his health will not permit him to continue.
Slim chance, I'll grant you, but it could happen.

It is unlikely - I don't think that McCain's ego will allow him to quit. And that's not meant as a necessarily disparaging remark. Let's face it, to think that you're the best person to run this country, your ego has to be awfully healthy in the first place. So we could say pretty much the same thing of Senator Obama were the situation reversed. However, Gov. Palin is a different situation. If she absolutely tanks on Thursday, look for her new born to develop a medical crisis that requires her to leave the campaign, leaving McCain to replace her with one of his two top choices, Lieberman or Ridge. Yeah, the conservative wing of the GOP will leave him to twist in the wind, but this was never about them - it was always about McCain.
I agree it's highly unlikely, Paul. When I wrote this, McCain seemed to be in the midst of a complete meltdown; I'm pretty sure it was the same day he announced he was "suspending" his campaign. (Which turned out to be yet another McCain-campaign lie, but that's another subject for another time.)
Anyway, I'm with you completely about his ego and his ambition. He has always wanted to be President, probably just so he could outrank his father and grandfather.
And now that even the wingers have started to say that Palin is in over her head, I do agree that she is the one to keep an eye on this week. She could be the lucky winner of a one-way ticket to Alaska after Thursday night, if the outcome is as bad as I think it could be.
I agree, McCain's ego is too big for him to do ever consider doing what is best for the country or for anyone but himself.
